Volunteering as a Servant!
Spirituality of the Service
BLESS USA is a holy and blessed service we
offer to God Almighty personally. We remember our Lord's words when
He said: "For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and
you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you
clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to
Me… Assuredly I say to you inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of
these My brethren, you did it to Me" (Matt 25:35-40).
BLESS USA is a wide-scoped service that
requires much work and many servants. The impact of the BLESS USA service
is one of great significance. As a servant at BLESS USA, we dedicate a part
of our life, but more importantly strive to dedicate our hearts to serving
the Lord. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, serving at BLESS USA is more
than an activity, it is a part of who we are.
As servants we strive to remember the following points:
Our Lord is the center of the service,
guiding our thoughts and actions through the work of His Holy Spirit. As
servants we are all intermediates. It is God Himself Who gives His brethren;
this is His work. Even though intermediates change over time, God continues to
provide for His people. We are only instruments that God uses to reach His
brethren.
The goal of the service is salvation. Our Lord taught us that the two greatest
commandments are: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind… You shall love your
neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the
Prophets" (Matt 22:37-40).
- Loving others manifests itself in service.
It is through serving others in this service that we seek to draw nearer to
God and experience Him, and also help others do the same.
BLESS USA is a spiritual service,
thus it is important for us to remember that although we "distribute to
the needs of the saints" (Rom 12:13), and
"minister to
them" by collecting contributions (cf Rom 15:25-26), we do not raise
funds. Our goal is to help bring people to God. As St. Paul said that we
need to first give our hearts to the Lord (cf 2 Cor 8:4-5). When people come to
God, they realize His generosity and will want to share that with others. Thus
our priority is to spread the Bible’s message and the Church’s teachings
concerning Christian living: love, worship, offering, etc.
As servants, we dedicate a part of our
life, but more importantly, strive to dedicate our hearts to serving to the
Lord.
- Thus out of love for God and our brethren,
BLESS USA servants are very committed to serving the Lord and take
our work very seriously.
- Our Lord tells us: "A new
commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you,
that you also love one another" (John 13:34,35).
- And true love brings forth service … St
John reminds us: "let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed
and in truth" (I Jn 3:18).
- The service is a priority in our lives
.
Thus we strive to be self-motivated, working very diligently
and devoting much of our time and effort to BLESS USA.
- Through the work of the Holy Spirit, serving
at BLESS USA will be more than simply an activity, it will become a part of
who you are. Through God's grace, we all hope to experience spiritual, as
well as personal growth.
We remember that we are the representatives of
those in need and the advocates of the disadvantaged.
- All services of the Church are equally
important. Because of this our service here needs to be a priority in our
lives.
- We need to promote the interests of the
brethren in our churches, with our family and friends and try to get
everyone actively involved in this holy service.
- Too many people depend on our service and
commitment, thus there can be no room for inconsistencies or
irresponsibility.
If we want to serve the Lord, we need to lead a life
of sacrifice. We have to sacrifice our desires to be able to provide for
others needs.
-
Our Lord says: "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save
his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find
it" (Matt 16:24-25).
-
St. John instructs us: "He laid down His life for us. And we also
ought to lay down our lives for the brethren" (I Jn 3:16).
-
To those who sacrifice St. Paul says: "For God is not unjust to
forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in
that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister" (Heb
6:10).
Ministering to the saints here means giving to those in need. The mother
church in the New Testament was Jerusalem and St. Paul used to gather contributions for
it on his journeys to other churches.
-
Mother Teresa comments on this concept: "Do not tire of giving, but
do not give your leftovers. Give until it hurts, until you feel the pain"…
"The less we have, the more we give… The less you have, the more you will
know how to share… Seems absurd, but it’s the logic of love."
BLESS USA servants serve outwardly on different
projects, but endeavor to serve inwardly with prayer. We labor in vain if
our service in not mixed with much prayer. Without our Lord, we "can do
nothing," (John 15:5). St. Paul advises: "Be anxious for
nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to God" (Phil 4:6).
We
strive to labor in secret remembering the words of our Lord that He said:
"But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what
your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your
Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly" (Matt
6:3-4).
We pray that all servants hold
fast to the above and are confident that through the grace of God and
the work of His fiery Spirit, the service will be fruitful.
